Flight Nanny vs. Ground Transport: How Your Ragdoll Kitten Gets Home Safely

So you’ve been approved to adopt a Ragdoll kitten — congratulations! Now comes a question many families don’t think about until it’s time: how does your kitten actually get from Sacramento to your front door?

If you live locally, this is simple. But for families across California or anywhere in the U.S., the answer involves one of two options: a flight nanny or ground transport. Both can be safe and stress-reducing for your kitten — but they work very differently, and the right choice depends on your situation.

Here’s everything you need to know.

What Is a Flight Nanny?

A flight nanny is a person — sometimes a professional pet transporter, sometimes a trusted individual — who physically carries your kitten in the cabin of a commercial flight. Your kitten travels in an airline-approved carrier under the seat in front of them, never in cargo.

This is the most common way Ragdoll kittens travel long distances, and for good reason.

Why flight nannies work well for Ragdolls:

Ragdolls are known for being calm and people-oriented. They tend to tolerate the travel experience better than many breeds, especially when they’re young, well-socialized, and have a calm human nearby. A flight nanny keeps your kitten close, monitored, and off the cargo belt entirely.

What to expect:

  • Your kitten will travel in a soft-sided carrier that fits under the seat
  • The flight nanny checks on your kitten throughout the flight
  • Most trips take just a few hours
  • You meet your kitten at the arrival airport — or sometimes at your door if the nanny drives the final leg

Typical cost: Flight nanny fees usually range from $200–$500 depending on distance, plus the cost of the flight itself. Some breeders have established relationships with trusted nannies and coordinate this on your behalf.

What Is Ground Transport?

Ground transport means your kitten travels by vehicle — either in a private car with a trusted transporter, or as part of a multi-stop transport route where the driver picks up and drops off multiple animals along the way.

Ground transport makes the most sense for families within driving distance, or when air travel isn’t practical.

When ground transport is a good fit:

  • You’re within a few hours of Sacramento
  • You prefer not to use air travel
  • Your kitten has a health condition that makes flying inadvisable
  • You want door-to-door delivery

What to watch out for: If you’re using a multi-stop ground transport service (sometimes called a “transport relay”), ask detailed questions. How many animals are in the vehicle? How long is the total route? How often are stops made for water and bathroom breaks? How is the climate controlled?

A well-run ground transport can be excellent. A poorly-run one can be stressful for your kitten. Ask for references and reviews.

Typical cost: Ground transport rates vary widely — from $1–$3 per mile for dedicated transport to flat fees for relay services.

What We Never Recommend: Cargo Shipping

One option you’ll see some breeders offer — and that we don’t support — is shipping kittens as cargo. This means your kitten travels in the pressurized cargo hold of a plane, alone, in a hard-sided crate.

While airlines do regulate this and some adult cats handle it fine, we don’t believe it’s the right choice for young kittens. The environment is unfamiliar, there’s no human contact during the journey, and stress levels can be significantly higher than in-cabin travel.

At Kitten Around Ragdolls, we will not ship kittens as cargo. We work with families to find an in-cabin solution — flight nanny, local pickup, or ground transport — every time.

Picking Up Your Kitten in Person

Many of our families choose to fly to Sacramento and carry their kitten home themselves. This is honestly our favorite option when it’s practical. You get to meet us in person, see where your kitten was raised, and your kitten bonds with you from the very first moment of travel.

If you fly in, we’ll help you prepare — including what carrier to bring, how to handle TSA with a live animal, and what to do on the plane to keep your kitten calm.

How We Handle Transport at Kitten Around Ragdolls

Every kitten adoption is different, and we work with each family to figure out the best transport plan. Here’s how we approach it:

  • Local families (Sacramento area): You’re welcome to pick up in person at our home in Sacramento.
  • California families: We can often coordinate a meet-up, or recommend a trusted ground transporter for longer distances.
  • Out-of-state families: We work with vetted flight nannies and can help coordinate booking once your kitten is ready to travel.

We never rush transport. Your kitten will be at least 12 weeks old, fully vaccinated for age, and vet-checked before any travel — no exceptions.

Questions to Ask Any Breeder About Kitten Transport

If you’re comparing breeders, transport policy tells you a lot about how they operate. Here are questions worth asking:

  • Do you ship kittens as cargo?
  • Who are the flight nannies or transporters you use, and can I contact them?
  • What’s included in the transport fee, and what’s extra?
  • What happens if a flight is canceled or delayed?
  • Can I pick up in person instead?

A breeder who has clear, thoughtful answers to these questions — and who prioritizes your kitten’s comfort over convenience — is one worth trusting.
